Winter and Looking Forward

After some brief winter hibernation we're back to being busy in our gardens - both at home and at El Rio Community School. Emily had flowers bloom in time for Valentine's Day for their first time (yay!) and Kylie has been busy whipping up gorgeous, delicious food per usual inspired by all that's in season. We love LA winter, when the lupines and milky oats and nettles pop up in their respective pavement cracks and hillsides.

We hosted our first ever February Break Camp in mid-February and had the best time :') We made Mexican marigold-infused ice cream, cared for the chickens, dyed napkins with sourgrass flowers and then stamped them with carved potatoes! The week left our hearts very much filled up. One of our beloved Sun Sprouts (who's always the first to arrive and the last to leave) exclaimed on the last day at pick-up, "HOW MANY DAYS UNTIL SUMMER????!!!!)

Summer IS indeed creeping closer, and we're excited to share registration for Sun Sprouts Farm Camp is now open! We'll be hosting our 6th annual summer day camp in Highland Park in Kylie's lush garden backyard. If you know a kid 5 years or older who loves to play in the mud and eat farm fresh food, send them our way :)

Fall in the Garden

Our summer was filled with many mud puddles, made-from-scratch rainbow tacos, and chicken hugs! Thank you to all the kids, families and friends who joined us for our 5th year of Farm Camp, we had the best time <3

Like the flowers, the heat has us wilting a bit. But we're looking forward to Fall for both cooler weather and our return to El Rio Community School's garden. We LOVE teaching gardening classes to 1st - 3rd graders, and running our after school program. We're seeking monetary and/or in-kind donations for our school garden supplies, if you'd like to help us out send us an email :)

Sun Sprouts Farm Camp 2025!

Our 5th annual Sun Sprouts Farm Camp is open for registration!!

The program that launched our farm dream into reality was born in 2021, during a time where the safest place for a kid to be was outdoors. We're in total awe that we still get to do this work 4 years later, and we're as excited as ever to keep offering a place for kids to become friends with chickens, make fresh pasta under a sapote tree and slip and slide in the mud.

The details:

Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 am - 2:30 pm

Week 1 ~~ June 16th - 20th

Week 2 ~~ June 23rd - 27th

Week 3 ~~ June 30th - July 4th

Sliding scale available!

Fall 2024 Update

We've launched a Patreon!

We're excited to continue offering our Sun Sprouts After School program at El Rio Community School, and we need your help to expand access to low income families. We are aiming to raise funds to cover the cost of at least 4 participants for the 2024-2025 school year.

Help us reach our goal by contributing a monthly donation via Patreon, or send a one time donation via Venmo.

THANK YOU <333

Summer Dispatch from Muddy Heaven

To our beloved community,

We're nearing the end of our summer programming, thank you for your continued support!

Our 3rd annual Sun Sprouts Farm Camp hosted nearly 50 kids (more than ever), including 10 kids per week who came for completely free! We loved playing with worms, painting butterfly, ladybug, beetle flags, and cooking and gardening together. We're looking forward to our Fall sessions of our after school group for El Rio students, and hope to offer a weekend workshop for youth sometime soon too.

Summer Bouquet Club is wrapping up and it's been a joy to share the abundance of summer with this enthusiastic group of flower lovers. And more blooms are on their way! Fall Bouquet Club is open for sign ups! Or send us a message to order a one-time bouquet, or a bucket of 100 stems for DIY arranging.

After a brief summertime hiatus, Garden Club returns on August 27th with a visit to Motherland Garden in mid city. Perren began this space in their mother's front yard "dedicated to eating and experimenting and enjoyment." They focus on "cultivating culturally important and less common edible and medicinal plants," and will share about their approach to soil health, pest predators, and Korean Natural Farming amendments. To join us, sign up here.

Thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support for this project, we wouldn't be here without you <3

with love, Kylie & Emily
